Recently, I went through a rough patch in my life. I missed a good friends wedding because of delayed/cancelled travel and my family had to put our 7 year old golden retriever down. Anyone who knows me, knows that one, I have horrible travel luck and two, I had a very special bond with my family’s golden retriever, Baxter. Whenever I went back to Massachusetts, I would spend most every second with him and he and I would absolutely love it.
Safe to say, it was a really tough two weeks and being away from family during such a tough time only made it harder. That said, I made a commitment to myself to take care of myself through that process. For me, taking care of myself looks like exercising, reading, going to my local park, and getting outside.
Through that whole rough patch, I made sure to continue to do those things even though I didn’t want to. Most days, I just wanted to lay in bed, not talk to anyone and just feel bad. While sometimes that is necessary, continuing to take care of myself was also a top priority and one that I knew I needed to do.
I wasn’t perfect, but I was and continue to be consistent and that’s what is making the difference in my wellbeing.
For those that are going through one of life’s inevitable rough patches, continue to show up for yourself. I know it’s hard. I know it sometimes doesn’t make a difference in the moment. But it’s worth it.
